Road-legal e-scooters: safe on the road

Would you like to use an e-scooter to get around your city? Then it is important that your e-scooter has a road licence! Since 1 June 2019, the 1st amendment to the StVO, together with the Motor Vehicles Act 1967, has regulated the use of e-scooters on public roads. With an authorised e-scooter, you can whizz through the city without having to worry. The road licence gives you the certainty that your e-scooter meets the legal requirements and that you can take part in traffic without any problems. With a road-legal e-scooter, you can fully enjoy the benefits of urban mobility and navigate the streets flexibly!

What exactly is a road-legal e-scooter?

A road-legal e-scooter fulfils all legal requirements for use on public roads. Without this authorisation, you are prohibited by law from using your e-scooter on public roads. These legal requirements for a road-legal e-scooter are set out in the Motor Vehicle Act (KFG). Basically, this includes technical requirements such as functioning brakes, white front light, red rear light and side reflectors.

When you buy an e-scooter from us, the model fulfils these legal requirements and is therefore approved for road use. You can look forward to an environmentally friendly, efficient and flexible way of getting around – especially in urban areas. But be careful! To be safe and legal on the road, you should always check the specific requirements of your region and, for example, only ride your road-legal e-scooter on certain roads.

Our tip: At comscoot you can quickly and easily find your road-legal e-scooter. Our ECO, ECO PLUS, PERFORMANCE, PERFORMANCE PLUS and MAX models are already waiting for you!

What criteria must a road-legal e-scooter fulfil?

In order to obtain a valid operating licence from the Federal Motor Transport Authority, your e-scooter must meet certain requirements:

  • Maximum speed of 25 km/h
  • Maximum output of 600 watts
  • Adequate lighting consisting of headlights, tail lights, reflectors and side reflectors
  • Two independent brakes

It is important to note that an e-scooter is not authorised in Austria if it is faster than 25 km/h. Your e-scooter must comply with the maximum speed limit in order to be legally protected when travelling on the roads.

To optimally protect your road-legal e-scooter against damage and theft, we recommend our e-scooter insurance. However, this is optional and not relevant for road authorisation. For the insurance to be effective, you must also purchase a security lock – for example, our alarm box with lock or a short folding lock with bracket.

Why is a road-legal e-scooter so important?

To protect yourself and other road users, you should always use a road-legal e-scooter outside your private property. These models meet all legal requirements and significantly minimise the risk of accidents with serious consequences. Using an e-scooter without a road licence can result in heavy fines. It is also necessary to observe the prescribed blood alcohol limit. Similar regulations apply as for other drivers in order to ensure road safety. This means that people driving e-scooters may have a blood alcohol concentration of up to 0.8 per mille without breaking the law. However, you should be aware that alcohol impairs your ability to react, your judgement and your motor skills, even with just a small amount, which is why it is advisable to generally refrain from driving e-scooters after consuming alcohol.

Our tip: For your own protection, it is advisable to also wear a helmet when riding a road-legal e-scooter. Although this is not mandatory by law, it can help to minimise potential injuries in the event of an accident.
